Frequently Asked Questions

RoadCover FAQ
General RAF Information
What is the Road Accident Fund (RAF)?
The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is a statutory fund that compensates people injured in motor vehicle accidents caused by the negligence of another driver. The RAF is funded through a fuel levy on petrol and diesel sold in South Africa.
Is the Road Accident Fund bankrupt?
No. The RAF receives billions annually from the national fuel levy and continues to process and settle valid claims.
Is the Road Accident Fund capped?
Certain claim categories are capped, including future loss of earnings and loss of support. Funeral expenses are also subject to prescribed limits. Medical expenses may remain uncapped depending on the nature of the claim.

When must I submit a claim?
Claims need to be submitted within 3 years if the negligent driver is identified, and within 2 years for hit-and-run accidents.
